Caring for the Exterior of Your Property

You like to keep your home looking good, and to maintain it in a style that suits your personality. You give some thought to every room in your house in an attempt to keep it looking its best. But how much time and effort do you put into looking after the exterior of your property?

The exterior of your property is an area that is too often neglected. Yet this sets the initial tone for any visitor, and how you and your family feel about coming home after a hard day’s work or any time away. If first impressions count- and they surely do- then the exterior of your property has to look as good as the inside, and make you proud and pleased as you walk in through the front door.

The front line

home

Whether your house has a yard, a garden or a simple driveway on which you park your car, this is the front line as far as appearances go and should always be taken care of. Keep it clean and tidy, with zero tolerance for litter and any other unnecessary clutter. Children’s toys, auto parts etc. should be cleared away and not left lying around. If you have garden then you need to look after it. Mow the lawn and remove unsightly weeds. Trim your bushes and hedgerows, and consider planting flowers for a splash of color. If the main feature of your driveway is your car, then keep that clean and looking good as well!

Garage pride

Nothing lets down an attractive home as much as a shabby and unsightly garage. If your garage is dirty and leaning, with junk spilling out onto the drive, doors hanging loosely and displaying mold, dirt and flaking paint then it needs sorting out pronto. Get in there and give it a good clean and tidy, a fresh coat of paint and, if necessary, some serious garage repair. Your garage should be somewhere you’re proud of, not just a dumping ground for all the things you can’t find another home for.

The devil is in the detail

Just keeping up everyday maintenance on the exterior of your home can make all the difference. Clean your windows regularly, check the roof is sound and look after drains and gutters. Remember, taking care of the outside isn’t just about appearances. Mold and mildew can easily set in, weakening the structure. Weather damage and general wear and tear can also go unnoticed. Ultimately, ignoring the exterior of your property can be dangerous as well as unsightly.

Once you decide to spruce up the exterior of your property you’ll wonder why you didn’t get started years ago! This is a job best done in the spring or early summer, when it’s a pleasure to be outside. Whether you’re fixing a fence, scrubbing the patio or repainting the front door, your work will give the exterior of your property a new lease of life while giving you a project to really get your teeth into.
