My Healing Kitchen

My daughter was complaining of her dry and itchy throat when she woke up this morning. Sore throat I guess. I made a warm saline solution (1/2 tbsp. of salt in 1 glass of warm water) and told her to gargle it. Few minutes after gargling, she smiled and hugged me and said that I am very good. I am doing this every time she has sore throat. Aside from our medicine cabinet, I can rely on my cupboards for first aid remedies. Some plants, spices, minerals and fruits have their powerful healing properties that can be used to treat common ailments and injuries. Here are some of them:

Ginger can reduce intestinal contractions, neutralize digestive acids, inhibit the “vomiting center” in the brain and soothes tired veins. You can make some ginger tea or soak your tired feet in warm water with pounded ginger.

Mustard is a good decongestant, can help to reduce a fever or soothe a headache. You can crush a little mustard seed to a cup of flour along with a little water to make a paste. You can rub this in the chest. Mustard’s pungent heat thins mucus, makes it easier to breathe when you have cold or flu. Just be sure to wash your hands after. Soaking your feet in hot water with a little mustard powder can help reduce fever and soothe headache too.

Garlic can reduce high blood pressure significantly. This maintains the flexibility of the blood vessels. Eat 1-2 cloves (about 4 grams) of garlic daily (raw or lightly cooked).

Lemon is a source of antioxidant bioflavonoid, can assist in healing wounds and can help in reducing pain, occurrence of varicose veins and age spots. A single lemon contains 40mgs. Vitamin C. You can make lemonade or apply the juice directly in age spots.

Salt made from sea water consist of magnesium sulfate and is incredibly useful. A solution of 1tsp. in half a glass of hot water when rubbed into the skin can dislodge backheads, cleanse, open pores and freshen skin. Gargling the solution can relieve sore throat. Adding two cups of salt in a warm bath and soak can help to shrink swollen tissues, reduce sprains and bruises and an excellent soak for hemorrhoids.

Vinegar has a high solution of acetic acid which is a useful weapon against bacteria and a suitable disinfectant if you have a scratch or sore. Just boil some vinegar and water then use the warm solution in washing the itchy area. Vinegar rinse can also remove cigar smoke from clothes and can banish unpleasant odors from armpits and feet.

Incredible isn’t it that we can find these feel-better remedies in our kitchen? Yours can be a healing kitchen too. All you have to do is make some research on how you can use the things in your cupboard or even under your sink as first aid remedies.
